Utopia Suite Disco
Utopia Suite Disco is a looping video installation by Clive Holden with original music and surround soundscape (2.1 track duration 74 minutes, full track version double loop, twice 2.1: one loop 60, another 74 minutes) by Oscar van Dillen.
Program notes to the music
A very different musical style was chosen than was used before in the earlier parts of Utopia Suite, this time reflecting the disco-music of the 1970's, which I intertwined with odd world music rhythms and Indian melodic structures and instruments. Together with a soundscape using both electronics and tuned samples (an invention of my own: to tune samples to their musical context creates a new kind of “Varèsian consonance”).
This project applies the concept of different simultaneously looping durations. The four screens each have different loops, the two audio loops are 60 and 74 minutes long. The two unequal audio loops are one with melodies, harmonies and soundscape, and the other with the rhythm and beats. Each of these needs a 2-channel output, the sounding result is a 4-channel surround, always different, looping installation. An additional subwoofer track results in the total number of audio channels to be five.
The six simultaneous loops always sets the materials in a new common context, and thus creates new meanings.
