Definition
A tone is a sound which can be perceived as a single pitch.

Nomenclature
- In Indian theory 7 basic tones are used: SA, RE, GA, MA, PA, DHA and NI (or short: S R G M P D N)
- In many countries the similar, originally medieval, system of solmisation with do, re mi, fa, sol, la, si is used
- In Western theory the diatonic system uses: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B
- As an exception to Western theory, in Germany B is used for a lowered B and B natural is replaced by H
Alterations
The different systems have different names for various kinds of alterations, sometimes leading to the use of a chromatic system.
Scales
A set of tones constitutes a scale.
