Definition
The diatonic system is based upon basic tones and is a core part of the tonal system of Western theory. Its theoretical basis is represented by 7-tone scales, with only whole tone and semitone distances, no other.
The tonal diatonic system evolved from the medieval church modes, which are a diatonic modal system.
