De Stad

De Stad was created by Oscar van Dillen, commissioned by both the Fund for the Creation of Music and the Rotterdam Historical Museum. It was the latter who developed the idea of creating a new exhibition about the history of Rotterdam, as a museum theater. One would gradually walk through the exhibition, lured by music and lighting, discovering historical episodes in a synesthetic context.[1] From the original idea for music and a soundscape, I created both the 45 minute chamber-symphony in 6 parts De Stad and a remix-version including soundscape of exactly 30 minutes Stadsgeschiedenis, the latter of which was used in a continuous and staged exhibition; both works were created, and recorded and released on SACD in 2003[2], with 5.1 surround sound in mind.

The instrumentation is intended to be a mini-symphony orchestra, stressing the lower register: bass-clarinet doubling contrabass-clarinet, bass-trombone, violin, viola, cello, contrabass, accordion, piano, percussion.
